Over here, we are trying to provide some guidelines on how to select the right audio system that meet your price budget. Unless you have good listening ears or have time to listen patiently, otherwise you are likely to select an audio system based on its audio specifications. For quick
reference, audio system with SNR better than 80dB and THD around 1% will sound better than traditional FM radio and many TV sets.
Why need good audio quality?
Good audio quality helps you relax. Poor audio quality (could) brings frustration and irritate your listening. You might not notice the frustration and irritation if only listening for a short duration (say less than 15min), or in a noisy environment.
What is the best or optimal listening volume?
Most audio system sounds the best at 10%~30% of its volume (or speaker power), and still have reasonbly good audio quality at around 30%~50% of its volume.
When play muisc through Bluetooth, set the volume at the media player (eg. cellphone) to maximum volume, and adjust the speaker system volume according to your desire loudness. This will give you the best audio quality.
How to select audio system from technical specifications?
There are many audio specifications contribute to audio quality. Loudness, Signal-to-Noise ratio and Distortion are the common specifications you can find in the user manual.
Audio quality of an audio system is depending on its electronics, speakers, amplifier and the casing design, it is not a straight forward answer to select a good audio system by
comparing audio specifications alone.
Ask yourself the following questions when you select an audio system.
1. Is the audio quality better than a traditional FM radio?
2. Is the audio loudness when you hear from 2~3 meters away?
3. Is the audio quality acceptable when you hear from 2~3 meters away?
4.Where you most likely to listen to the system?
The following paragraphs on Loudness, SNR and Distortion will give you some idea to compare the audio specifications of similar audio systems.
You can refer to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_system_measurements for detail explanations of each specifications.
Loudness
Loudness of an audio system refers to how loud a speaker can produce. It is associated with both speaker output power (Watt) and speaker efficiency (conversion of power to sound, that not normally stated in user manual).
A typical 3Wx2 audio systems with 40mm speakers is loud enough for listening within 6m x 6m area. However, because of different speaker efficiency, two different 3W speakers could sound very different.
In other words, higher loudness (watt) does not means better audio quality. Blasting your traditional FM radio to its maximum volume will give you the loudness, but not necessary a better audio quality.
Selecting the loudness of an audio system starts from your knowledge of your listening environment. If you intend to listen in an area of 4m x 4m in a quiet living room, a 2Wx2 systems is normally good enough. For 4m x 4m outdoor or a 6m x6m indoor, 3Wx2 system should give reasonably good audio quality.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio(SNR)
The SNR of an audio system tells you how noisy a system could be. A higher SNR number gives lower noise.
In a typical audio system, the SNR will get worst (noiser) when speaker volume get higher. This noise went unnoticed into your ears (and brain) which is what make you feel frustrated and irritated when listening to a music.
Some audio system measures SNR at its full rated audio output but most measures noise when there is no audio. Normally the noise level will get worst when audio volume increases. This difference in measurement makes comparison of SNR between system unreliable. However, we could assume higher SNR has better audio quality for systems in the same price range.
Distortion
Distortion is caused by various sections of an audio system not performing in their best/optimal operating regions. A higher power system will generally give lower distortion compare to a lower power system at the same speaker loudness. In other words, a 20W audio system generally gives lower distortion than a 3W audio system at 1W speaker output.
Audio system with =<1% distortion give reasonably good audio quality. Most systems give 1% distortion around 40~70% of its volume.
